Used/Refurbished Fire Extinguishers

Buying Refurbished Fire Extinguishers

At All Florida Fire Equipment, we sell refurbished fire extinguishers. The extinguishers are as effective as new but have had some of the original parts replaced.

Over time, things like O-rings, valves, hoses, and other pieces of a fire extinguisher need to be replaced. These rubber items will dry, shrink, or simply shift.

Some building owners will opt for newer models rather than have refurbished in their buildings. Sometimes, it’s an insurance mandate.

This means that there are lots of fire extinguishers that are in great working order after a bit of a tune-up. We fix them up, hydro test them, and then we’re able to resell them at a discount off of the price of a new fire extinguisher.

What’s the difference between new and refurbished fire extinguishers?

In truth, nothing other than cosmetics. Over the years, fire extinguisher finishes can begin to look a bit ragged. Just being knocked against things for years will take off some paint or scuff a stainless steel finish.

Some businesses, where the extinguishers are visible to the public, will opt for new devices for appearance.

Refurbished Extinguishers

What do you do to prepare for a used fire extinguisher for resale?

The extinguisher receives a thorough inspection and there are some parts, like those listed above, that we will replace as a matter of routine.

The device is then recharged and hydro tested. We offer the same six-year hydro test on used extinguishers that we offer on new ones.

Are used fire extinguishers legal?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t sell you anything that isn’t. We certify them just as we do everything else. They’re just less expensive, since you aren’t buying an all-new device, but they are just as effective and are 100% legal.

What types of used/refurbished fire extinguishers do you sell?

A quick guide to fire extinguisher classes

Fire extinguishers are classed based on what type of fire they work best on. There is no such thing as an extinguisher that works on all fires, but some, like ABC fire extinguishers, will take care of most common fires.

Class A – Paper, wood, rubber, cloth, etc.

Class B – Flammable liquids, such as gas, oil, and flammable gases.

Class C – Live electrical equipment – lighting gear, audio gear, transformers, etc.

Class D – Combustible metals, like sodium or lithium. This is not usually a danger in most businesses or homes. If it’s something you deal with at work, you will already know.

Class K – This class is for cooking fires that involve flammable fats. Class K fire extinguishers are designed to reduce grease splash and fire flare-up.

Why buy a refurbished fire extinguisher?

The simplest answer is price. They are much less expensive than new devices.

There’s no compromise in safety or quality when you buy from a licensed shop, like All Florida Fire Equipment.

Important note: Never buy a used fire extinguisher from anyone without getting it checked out. Every six years, an extinguisher must be hydro-tested and certified. If you buy an extinguisher from someone other than a licensed shop, you run the risk of not having a working one when you need it.
